Food service programs like SNAP and WIC are intended to aid the issue of food insecurity, but
obstacles like transportation, child care, or time off work prevent eligible people from participating.

Food deserts

People living in food deserts live in areas where it is difficult to attain food that is both
affordable and nutritious due to scarcity of supermarkets.

Health outcomes

Individuals experiencing food insecurity are more likely to experience anemia, asthma, diabetes,
hypertension, tooth decay, depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation.

Minority disparities

Women are nearly twice as likely to experience food insecurity than men.


Non-Hispanic black people are 69% more likely to experience food insecurity than
non-Hispanic white people while Hispanic people are 24% more likely.
